Ozzy Fox: Disney’s 5 Bold Bets on AI Animation

Disney just did something it’s never done before, and barely said a word about it. Ozzy Fox showed up on YouTube this week with zero fanfare — first Disney Jr. show ever built with an AI-driven animation studio.

What Ozzy Fox Actually Is

A five-year-old fox and his family, turning ordinary routines into little adventures. That’s the whole premise. First two episodes? One’s about cleaning up, the other’s about potty training — so yeah, you know exactly who this is for. No press release, no rollout plan that anyone could find. It just… appeared, on YouTube and YouTube Kids. And it worked anyway. Almost 800,000 views in two days.

Who’s Behind It

Worth saying upfront: this wasn’t some anonymous content-farm job. Jennifer Oxley — Emmy winner, made Peg + Cat — created it. Guillermo García-Carsí, the guy behind Pocoyo, developed it as creative director at Animaj, the French-UK studio actually building the thing. And Animaj isn’t new to Disney’s orbit either; they went through the Disney Accelerator Program a couple years back. So this had been brewing for a while, quietly.

Nobody’s said exactly how much AI touched the finished product. What we do know is Animaj’s whole pitch centers on what they call a “proprietary AI-powered, digital-first production model,” and they’re already reaching something like 240 million kids a month on YouTube running that pipeline.

Why the Quiet Launch

CartoonBrew reported the companies wanted the show to “speak for itself” — no big announcement, no press push. For a company Disney’s size, that’s a choice, not an oversight. Feels a lot like testing the water. Drop it quiet, watch how people react, adjust from there, skip the extra scrutiny that comes with announcing “hey, we made an AI cartoon.”

The Bigger Disney-AI Picture

None of this happens in a vacuum. Disney signed a billion-dollar deal with OpenAI last year. There’s already talk of letting Disney+ subscribers generate their own clips with characters like Mickey and Elsa. Ozzy Fox fits right into that same push — just aimed at an audience too young to notice anything changed behind the scenes.

Animaj’s co-founder Toon Dray has pushed back on the “AI slop” label before, arguing that content farms with no quality standards are already flooding kids’ content, and that serious studios adopting these tools is basically the only real check on that. Fair point, honestly. Also exactly what companies tend to say right before doing more of the thing people are worried about.

Innovation or Slop? Depends Who You Ask

Reaction’s split pretty clean down the middle. Some people are calling it AI slop with a Disney name slapped on. Others point out the animation doesn’t look rough or broken at all — none of the extra-fingers, warped-face stuff people picture when they hear “AI cartoon” — and that having a veteran like Oxley attached changes things. Whether any of that matters to a five-year-old watching a song about brushing teeth? Different question entirely.

What This Means Going Forward

It’s a small show. But the timing and the people behind it say more than the two episodes themselves do. A studio the size of Disney testing AI-assisted production on something actually released — not a demo, not a pitch deck — that’s the kind of thing the rest of the animation world pays attention to. If the numbers hold up the way they started, expect a lot more studios asking themselves the same questions Disney apparently already answered.
